Chelsea are not used to it over recent years - they're normally involved in the end-of-season stuff. But they need to pull themselves together because they're all playing for their futures - a new manager is coming in.

It's an interesting one to see how Frank Lampard deals with the next few weeks because he knows he's not going to be there.

As players you just knuckle down and get on with it.

Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti, speaking to BT Sport: "They [Chelsea] played really well, they were prepared. We suffered a lot and helped us stay at 0-0 at the end of the first half. Second half we were much better and scored the two goals. We are happy to have qualified."

On Thibaut Courtois: "He was the best last season and is the best also this season."

The two goals: "The two goals we scored were a fantastic combination. We managed the ball. The second half was much better and in transition we were much better."

A step closer to a 15th Champions League? "We try but we have another 180 minutes. But we try. We are ready to be there and we are ready to fight for the final."

Chelsea

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard speaking to BT Sport about whether there are positives to take from the performance against Real Madrid:

"Yeah, for sure. We played really well for 60 minutes. We created chances but you have to take them.

"You don't want to praise the performance too much when you lose at this level but we were much improved. This club has been further in this competition and the players can take this feeling forward with them for the future."

Goalscoring an issue? "It's not for the want for trying."

What now? "You're playing for Chelsea. So regardless, every game you play you have to give everything. I won't let anyone off the hook and we have to show. That standard cannot drop."

If you're going to take any positives out of this year it's been a huge learning curve for everyone.

Seasons like this are not accepted by Chelsea fans. It's not the Chelsea we know. Certain expectations come with this club.

The owners need to take stock going into the summer and they need to get aligned with the people below them.

Chelsea are currently languishing in 11th place in the Premier League. They will not be in the Champions League next season, a big pull for potential purchases, while Todd Boehly and the Clearlake group must find a manager to mend the fractures in the club after the sackings of Thomas Tuchel and Graham Potter this season.

It will have to be ambition and reputation that lures that man because all the elite names who may come into contention will invariably wish to ply their trade in the Champions League.

Frank Lampard will need to show some serious powers of motivation to inspire an upbeat end to the season at a club that has lost its way.

AC Milan

AC Milan and England defender Fikayo Tomori to BT Sport: "Apart from the end when we conceded, we controlled the game. I think we deserve to be in the semi-final. We looked dangerous on the counter-attack.

"Really happy. Now we can stit back and watch the game [Inter v Benfica] tomorrow. The way I'm feeling now, I'll be watching with my legs up. I'm so tired. We're just worrying about ourselves. We can be relaxed and wait to see who we play. It could be Inter which would be a nice semi-final but Benfica are a strong team.

"We put in such a huge shift. Right at the end we just lost our man. It was a split-second we didn't manage to cover all the spaces.

"If someone told us we'd not keep a clean sheet but still go through we'd have taken it.

"Last year we won the league but didn't do as well in the Champions League. This year we aren't doing as well in the league but are having a really good season in the Champions League.

"A lot of people wrote us off when the quarter-final draw was made. Of course we have a lot of confidence now. We're playing well lately. Hopefully we can keep it going."

In among the many mistakes made by Chelsea's new ownership group led by Todd Boehly, one of the most obvious is shelling out £600m in a madcap transfer spree but failing to acquire someone who deals in the most precious commodity of all, namely goals.

Chelsea gave a very decent performance here, certainly the best of Frank Lampard's short reign, but a painful lack of end product meant there was almost an air of inevitability they would eventually be punished by the street wisdom and quality in Carlo Ancelotti's side.

N'Golo Kante had Chelsea's best opportunities while Marc Cucurella and substitute Mykhailo Mudryk also failed to cash in on good positions, although the latter's chance came with only minutes left and the tie over.

Chelsea

Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, speaking to BT Sport: "I feel like we played well and had a lot of chances. But football is all about taking your chances which we didn't do today. Of course we are going to be gutted. We haven't got that [cutting edge] at the minute but that was definitely a big improvement on recent performances.

"We pushed players forward and Real Madrid were able to catch us a couple of times. We take it one game at a time. Hopefully we can build on the performance because I feel it was positive in a way."

There's talent in the squad but they're just imbalanced. They're heavy in midfield and in the key areas that's where teams like Real Madrid are further forward and Chelsea are behind.

Chelsea failed to score in both legs of a Champions League knockout phase tie for the second time, after a 1-0 aggregate defeat against Liverpool in the 2004-05 semi-finals (Frank Lampard played in both legs).
